To celebrate Clean Air Day 2020, Zenobē is pleased to highlight two new green transport projects that will substantially improve air quality for local communities in very measurable ways.
Every year, air pollution causes up to 36,000 deaths in the UK. The World Health Organisation and the UK Government recognise that air pollution is the largest environmental health risk we face today. Poor air quality causes heart and lung diseases, is linked to low birth weight and children’s lung development and may even contribute to mental health issues.
Newport
In Newport, Zenobē Energy has partnered with Newport Transport Ltd, wholly owned by Newport City Council, to provide Wales’s first-ever fleet of electric buses. A total of 15 Yutong buses will service the people of Newport on multiple routes beginning Monday 12th October.
By using electric buses, Newport will remove approximately 11,550 tonnes of Co2 and 4,500 kg of Nox from entering the earth’s atmosphere over the next 15 years.
Seven of the buses will be dedicated to the three routes between Newport, Caerleon and Cwmbran, including picking up the staff and patients at the new specialist critical care centre, The Grange University Hospital.
As the national government and Welsh Assembly drive towards 2050 net-zero emissions targets and following promises to bring ‘Clean Air Zones’ to Welsh towns and cities, the fleet highlights a milestone for Newport City Council and the residents of Newport alike.
Leeds
In Leeds, Zenobē has partnered with First Bus, a subsidiary of First Group, and Yutong UK and Pelican Engineering to supply the city’s first ever fleet of electric vehicles as part of an exciting and innovative approach to vehicle electrification. Together they will roll out nine new electric buses in Hunslet Park, Leeds. The fleet is part of First Group’s successful Ultra-Low Emission Bus Scheme (ULEB) funding announced earlier this year. Charging infrastructure and on-board batteries has been match-funded and installed by Zenobe.
This transport project is an important part of Leeds City Council’s ‘Clean Air Leeds’ initiative which seeks to improve air quality citywide.
With the rollout of nine new electric buses, Leeds has saved 6,930 tonnes of Co2 and 2700 kg of Nox from entering the earth’s atmosphere over the next 15 years.
Our continued commitment to the environment
For Clean Air Day 2020, Zenobē will continue to empower businesses to actively combat climate change and improve air quality through innovative transport projects and the intelligent use of energy storage.
Already our transport projects will remove a combined total of more than 135,000 tonnes of Co2 from the earth’s atmosphere over the next 15 years. Additionally, our other stationary battery projects throughout the UK are saving an extra 21,000 tonnes of Co2 emissions over the next 15
