Z Energy: second-life battery trial for EV charging

Using repurposed EV bus batteries to expand charging capacity without grid upgrades

01.

The problem

Z Energy, a leading fuel supplier in New Zealand, sought to expand EV charging at its Tom Pearce Drive site in Auckland without the need for costly and time-consuming electricity network upgrades.

The orange unit, made from a repurposed bus battery, features bold white text that reads: ‘This old bus battery now charges EVs for a living.’ It is positioned against a grey wall with a security camera and electrical conduit visible above.

The solution

Zenobē provided a Powerskid, a mobile energy solution repurposed from EV bus batteries, to deliver EV charging without additional grid demand. The Powerskid supports two simultaneous 75kW CCS/CHAdeMO chargers, enabling fast charging for EV drivers. Its portable nature allows it to be deployed wherever temporary or flexible charging is needed, including remote locations, construction sites, and events.

Key results

  • Enabled EV charging expansion at Z Energy without electricity grid upgrades
  • Provided a mobile and scalable solution for charging infrastructure
  • Showcased the viability of second-life batteries in commercial applications
“We need the right technology to ensure the switch to electric transport doesn’t put additional pressure on the grid, or consumers. This project demonstrates this is possible, and supports our work with bus operators across Aotearoa New Zealand to build energy optimisation into their electrification plans.”
